Blue lapis lazuli in three solid pieces
weighs a total of 1 pound 3 3/4 ounces. The lapis is the right size
to slab on a trim saw. The pieces measure 1 1/2 inch by 2 inch by
1 1/2 inch, 2 inch by 3 inch by 1 1/2 inch, and 2 1/4 inch by 2 inch
by 1 1/2 inch. One piece with a pilot cut is royal blue with a few
white calcite blems and streaks of yellow pyrite. The other two pieces

Picture Rock Pair

Africa Queen picture jasper is a 2 ½
pound rock, 5 ½ inch by 2 1/3 inch by 3 inch. Africa queen
has contrasting light and dark lines forming bold landscape scenes.
Africa Queens seems to have a grainy texture that is not usually used
in cabochon making but produces fine displays. The other rock is a
mystery rock from 1960’s stock and is a bit more subdued in
color contrast. The 6 by 3 by 1 3/4 inch, 2 pound, 1 ounce rock has
a beige center and layers of cinnamon shades at the edges. |

Turritella are gastropods that have
been present from the Cretaceous Period through to the present with
a wide distribution. The elongated cones have arched whorls with deep
sutures between. This highly silicated specimen is loaded with turritella
shells with some 7/8 inch intact shells. The fossil Turritella fancy
cutting rough when oriented for sectioned swirls of white shell in

The calcite and silicate replaced horned coral has an interior structure
of tubes radiating outward from the center and can be cut into 1/4
slices that are crème colored, translucent and will polish.
