geode has multiple vugs filled with clear to pale blue celestite crystals.
Celestite is strontium sulfate. The blue color is thought to be from
the natural irradiation of gold.
The 6 1/2 inch by 5 1/2 inch by 2 inch,
3 pound 7.4 ounce plate section of celestite geode from Madagascar
is a solid mass of lustrous, slender, sky blue crystals up to 1 inch
long. The celestite plate is composed of larger base crystals covered
with layers of tiny crystals in fascinating groupings that give this
specimen a druzy, ethereal appearance. The blue color of these celestite
(strontium sulfate) crystals is thought to be caused by natural irradiation
of gold. The gem luster and heavenly translucent blue make this one
of the most beautiful of the crystal minerals.
